Computer engineering is defined as the discipline that embodies the science and technology of designing, building, implementing and maintaining software and hardware components of modern computer systems and computer-controlled equipment. Computer engineering has always been considered a combination of computer science (CS) and electrical engineering (EE). It has evolved over the past three decades as a separate discipline, though intimately linked. Computer engineering is firmly rooted in the theories and principles of computer science, mathematics, science and engineering and applies these theories and principles to solve technical problems through the design of computer hardware, software, networks and processes. This makes computer engineers particularly versatile when they graduate.


How can I become an IT engineer?

With the ubiquity of computers and computer systems around the world today, computer engineers must be versatile in knowledge from standard subjects in computer science and electrical engineering as well as the basics in mathematics and science. Due to the rapid pace of change in the field of computer science, computer engineers must be lifelong learners to maintain their knowledge and skills in the discipline they have chosen. From this information alone, it is clear that what is computer engineering, one would receive a fairly balanced education in all areas of computer science and technology. What is the goal of computer engineering: to create individuals who can keep pace with recent technological developments in their field. Of course, a computer engineering degree is completed at an accredited university. However, these programs vary, and I suggest checking your university of choice for details on the computer engineering program in addition to the basic program (above). If you want to register as a professional engineer (P.Eng), you should consult your regional regulation, even if being a professional engineer is not necessary to work, and in my opinion, relates more to other disciplines of 'engineering.
